NIAA Award of Excellence standings updated through winter season

Panthers, Mustangs, Wolverines and Gaels take lead at mid-point of NIAA’s Award of Excellence standings

Pahranagat Valley High School (1A), The Meadows School (2A), Truckee High School (3A) and Bishop Gorman High School (4A) lead their respective classifications through the winter season in the NIAA’s Award of Excellence in Academics, Athletics and Citizenship.

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, the non-profit governing body of high school athletics in the Silver State, began the Award program in 2001. The scoring system awards points to schools based on their varsity teams’ performances in the classroom, at the athletic venue and in the Citizenship Through Sports Program. Each of the three major categories in high school activities – academics, athletics and sportsmanship – are weighted equally, and boys and girls programs are combined in the standings table. Points will also be awarded at the conclusion of the spring season for student council participation. Points will be deducted at the conclusion of the school year for ejections and other unsportsmanlike conduct. Spirit points have already been added.

The NIAA honors the winning school in each classification by presenting it with a commemorative trophy and banner. The NIAA considers the Award of Excellence in Academics, Athletics and Citizenship to be its top overall program.

Pahranagat Valley (840 points), the four-time defending and six-time overall Class 1A champion, leads Wells by 180 points. Eureka (560), Sage Ridge (540), Coleville (450) and Smith Valley (400) round out the top six.

The Meadows (1060 points), the two-time defending champion and four-time overall Class 2A champion, leads Battle Mountain by 50 points. Whittell (970), Incline (920) and Pershing County (910) round out the top five.

Truckee (1530 points), a two-time past Class 3A champion, holds a 160-point lead over Boulder City. Spring Creek (1220), Lowry (1190), Virgin Valley (1050) and Moapa Valley (1030) round out the top six.

Bishop Gorman, which has never captured an Award of Excellence title, leads the large-school classification with 1580 points. Bishop Manogue (1540), Reno (1460), Galena (1360), Carson (1350), Coronado (1350), Palo Verde (1330, the three-time defending champion), Centennial (1260), Reed (1210) and Silverado (1170) round out the top 10.

A listing of winter-season categorical records is on the next page. A listing of past champions is on the last page, below the updated point totals.
